You’ve heard it a million times. Great skin is not simply a matter of DNA. It’s a reflection of good health, the right lifestyle practices and skincare habits. It’s a job that many women take seriously. And yet somehow, they don’t know where to start or how to begin. As a general rule of thumb, it’s good to first consult a skin expert to help you in your glow job – yes, you read that right. But depending on which skin or dermatologist experts you consult, there’s a dizzying number of opinions on caring for your skin and how to get you closer to your lifelong dream of glowing and luminous skin.
This week, we take a look at 4 tips you can do to sort through all the experts’ noise and make your face glow effortlessly! Ranked top of the list is definitely sunscreen, the queen of all in the endless sea of skincare products.
#1 – Use enough sunscreen
There is a misconception that putting on sunscreen acts as a shield of armour that makes us impenetrable by the sun. Unfortunately that is not the case. In fact, sunscreen alone is not enough to protect you from the sun’s harmful UV rays that cause your skin’s dullness, dark patches, tanned skin, or even fine lines. It only protects your skin from the harsh sun rays for 2-3 hours while outdoors. To tackle this problem, aim to reapply your sunscreen every 2-3 hours and make sure you always use enough of it.
When choosing your sunscreen, try to go for safe, antioxidant-rich mineral sunscreen to give your skin complete protection from environmental aggressors. A good recommendation here is the Sknedit’s Sunforgettable® with SPF 50. We scoured the research, and found this thankfully. And thanks again to Sknedit, Passion Members may now take time to peruse their collection with a 10% discount storewide. #2 – Avoid the sun during high UV index hours
Our skin uses sunlight to help manufacture vitamin D, which is important for normal bone formation. But there’s a downside. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause major damage to your skin, from dark spots and pigmentation to acne and wrinkles. Additionally, ultraviolet rays also burn the skin and reduce its elasticity, leading to premature aging in some women.
The best way to prevent it is by avoiding the sun during high UV index hours. However, this varies depending on where you live. For example, in Singapore, high UV index hours are between 11am to 3pm. Thus, you won’t have to worry about UV exposure that can cause all the above issues.
But having said that, if you can’t avoid outdoors during this time, it’s recommended that you look for topical skincare treatments like serums and moisturisers that have terms like “brightening” and “skin tone-evening” on their packaging. Daily application of these brighteners can illuminate your complexion over time and the effects of sunburn can be less visible within a few weeks, with optimal results in about three months.
Lastly, don’t forget good old H2O. Proper hydration is directly related to skin cell regeneration and it’s a key to becoming your glowiest self. Drink 8-10 cups of water a day to effectively increase your skin moisture.
#3 – Establish your skincare routine
In the pursuit of a healthy, radiant complexion, follow a skincare routine religiously and give it time it needs to reap the benefits. This routine only consists of 5 easy steps and can be done by anyone who wants to have that ‘big’ glowing impact in the mirror:
- Cleansing – washing your face.
- Exfoliating – shedding dead skin cells.
- Toning – balancing skin.
- Moisturising – hydrating and softening the skin.
- Applying sunscreen – protecting your skin from the harsh sun rays.
Cleansing helps your skin ward off dirt, excess oil and makeup residue so it is very important that you do not skip this step in your skincare routine. Once you cleanse your face, light exfoliate it with either a non-irritating acid cleanser or enzyme that dissolves dead skin cells on the surface. Next, use toner to balance your skin’s PH. Allow your face to dry before proceeding to the next step – moisturising, which is perhaps one of the most essential steps in your skincare routine for that glowing complexion. Depending on whether you’re going outdoors, you can then consider applying sunscreen as the last step in your skincare routine.
Tips: It only takes a few minutes a day to commit to this routine so practice this as often as you can in your daily habit. With any skincare product, apply in order of consistency – from thinnest to thickest. For example, exfoliator, toner, moisturiser, and then sunscreen.
#4 – For a fast fix, try a face mask!
When it comes to instant skin-plumping and glow-boosting goals for the skin, face masks seem to universally rank top of mind. This is because face masks can help hydrate skin, remove excess oils, and help improve the appearance of pores – while providing a relaxing, spa-like experience at home. Hence in the pursuit of a radiant, youthful skin, a face mask is a time-tested ritual as many women would attest.
Just smooth one on as you would a face lotion at bedtime and let it soak into skin. You can also practice a facial massage after that to lessen tension and increase circulation. Not only does it feel enjoyable, but you’ll be able to help to keep skin cells healthy and – bonus – aid in lymphatic drainage. Bottom line: applying face masks plus massaging lead to better-looking, glowing skin.
